Using Generative AI

Generative AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, or Google’s Gemini, to name a few, can be very helpful in preparation for DBX DE certification exams.

These tools can help the student in a variety of ways. For example, they can summarise complex documentation and explain Databricks/Spark features in simpler terms. They can provide code examples or troubleshoot errors.

Gen-AI tools can also “roleplay” and act as an instructor. They can simulate real-world scenarios or case studies, allowing the student to practice problem-solving in a realistic environment.

But, their biggest strength surely lies in their ability to quickly generate not only practice questions, flashcards, or quizzes, but also entire personalised study plans. Additionally, all material can be tailored to particular topics, allowing the student to be as focused or as broad as necessary.

In asking the AI, a student can be as detailed or as brief as they want, although more elaborate prompts usually yield better responses.

In general, using generative AI tools can significantly enhance the learning process, make it more efficient and interactive, and quickly adapt it to individual needs.

Caveats and common traps

While generative AI tools can be valuable for studying, there are important caveats to consider.

Information provided by such tools may not always be accurate. Even though models are getting better, hallucinations can still occur, and AI-generated explanations or code samples can contain subtle errors which can be hard to catch unless you already have a firm grasp on the subject matter.

Another important thing to consider is the use of older models. Models are not updated with new information, and every model has a knowledge cutoff date. For a rapidly evolving platform like Databricks, this can mean that the responses can omit certain features, practices or even provide information which have become obsolete since the time model was trained.

Relying solely on AI tools can also lull the student into using these tools exclusively, limiting the exposure to official documentation and substituting hands-on practice for rote learning. Using these tools only as a supplement for the authoritative resources and practical experience, rather then a replacement for them, is crucial for successful certification.

Example uses

Generating a study plan

Using very simple prompts, students can generate entire study plans. They can easily be adjusted to include anything which might be necessary to enable student to learn efficiently:

With additional prompts, such outputs can then be transformed into a more structured form and be loaded into a project management software like Jira or Trello. Generating quizzes and mock exams

With some prompt engineering, we can generate short quizzes on certain topics or even the entire mock exams. Paired with a study plan, this can be a great way to test your knowledge, identify gaps and reinforce what you’ve learned.

While you can use simple prompts to generate good tests, it is better to make it more elaborate, so that you can get consistent and more realistic output. If you can use a model which can handle a high number of token input/output, you can create very elaborate and practical exams, enriched with additional content.

Here is an elaborate example prompt asking the model to generate practice questions which cover two topics, but in a specific way. The given answer choices can sound very similar to each other, which is often in line with the choices presented on the real exam. Additionally, the prompt asks to also provide example code in case the student has any doubts, as well as the correct answers and short explanations why other choices are incorrect.
